How You Will Make an Impact:
As a Maintenance Shift Lead, you will provide frontline leadership and advanced technical support to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Dune Express conveyor systems and associated equipment. In this role, you will lead shift-based maintenance activities, coordinate crews, and serve as the primary point of contact between maintenance, operations, and leadership. You will drive execution of maintenance plans, support complex troubleshooting efforts, and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with operational priorities.
Responsibilities
Lead and coordinate daily maintenance activities for the assigned shift to ensure safe and efficient execution of work
Serve as the primary point of contact for maintenance crews, operations, and leadership during the shift
Plan, prioritize, and allocate work to team members based on operational needs and maintenance schedules
Perform hands-on maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of conveyor systems and associated equipment
Provide technical guidance and support to mechanics during troubleshooting and repair activities
Monitor system performance, throughput, and equipment condition to proactively identify issues
Ensure compliance with Atlas safety standards, MSHA/OSHA regulations, LOTO procedures, and site-specific safety requirements
Lead pre-job planning activities, including JSAs, Take 5s, permits, and hazard identification
Intervene and stop work when unsafe conditions or behaviors are identified
Ensure work orders are executed, documented, and closed out accurately in CMMS systems
Complete shift reports detailing work completed, ongoing issues, and risks
Coordinate planned and unplanned downtime to maximize equipment availability and minimize production interruptions
Escalate safety, operational, or reliability concerns to leadership as required
Step in to support operations during critical events, including troubleshooting downtime and equipment failures
Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance maintenance practices and equipment reliability
Work overtime or extended hours as required to support operational needs
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required:
High school diploma or GED required
Five (5) + years of experience in mechanical maintenance, including conveyor systems and heavy equipment
Demonstrated experience in a lead, senior, or acting leadership role within a maintenance environment
Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems
Working knowledge of conveyor systems and bulk material handling equipment
Strong understanding of safety systems, LOTO, permits, and hazard controls
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
Experience using CMMS systems for work order management and reporting
Strong communication and leadership skills in a field-based environment
Valid driver’s license and qualified through company MVR policy
Must be able to pass a DOT physical
Preferred:
MSHA certification or prior experience in MSHA-regulated environments
Supervisory or formal leadership training
Welding, fabrication, or mechanical trade certifications
Experience with industrial controls, PLCs, or SCADA systems
Experience coordinating maintenance planning and downtime activities
Reporting Relationship:
Reports To: Conveyor Manager
Supervisory Responsibilities: Provides day-to-day direction and oversight to the assigned maintenance crew
Work Location & Travel Requirements
Location: Dune Express (field-based operational site)
Work Environment: Field and shop environment, including outdoor conditions, working at heights, and exposure to varying weather conditions
Travel %: Minimal to moderate (primarily local/site-based travel as required for operations and maintenance activities)
Schedule/Work Arrangement:
Rotating schedule (14 days on / 7 days off / 14 days on) with 12-hour shifts (5:45 AM – 6:15 PM)
Physical Demands:
Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing, bending, and standing for extended periods
Capable of working at heights, in confined spaces, and in proximity to operating equipment
Ability to work outdoors in varied and sometimes extreme weather conditions
Manual dexterity to operate tools, equipment, and perform advanced mechanical repairs
Must be able to safely operate vehicles and equipment and meet DOT physical requirements
